Our Mission Statement

  • To use the game of football to build confidence, peer credibility and achievement in children of all abilities.
  • To engage parents positively, to manage their expectations & establish constructive & respectful touchline behaviours.
  • To develop positive & contributing parents into the next Boothstown coaches to take children forward into the Mini Leagues.

Our History

Den_Mike_AcademyThe Boothstown FC Academy was founded in 2004 by Den Treacy & Mike Stephens and evolved from the Boothstown u6 football nursery, picked up by Den in 2003.

The Academy was modelled on the best practice principles of a solid & consistent introduction & development plan for new children.

Boothstown FC is an FA Charter Standard Community Club, which means all our coaching staff are as a minimum FA level 1 qualified, Child Protection & First Aid qualified, and of course CRB checked through the Manchester FA.

After 12 years dedicated service, Den & Mike Stephens retired from the Academy at Christmas 2014.

The reins were then picked up by Mike Roberts, who had been coaching for 8 years at Boothstown FC, since his son (Harrison) had graduated out of the Academy with Den & Mike Stephens back in 2010.

Mike retired from the academy for the season starting in September 2017, when it was decided that the academy would be taken by the same coach who would also take the team forward into progressive age groups, rather than this starting at Under 7 as it did before. Also, a second academy was set up on a Sunday morning, again for Under 5s. The Saturday academy was taken on by Mark Bennett, who ran it on a Saturday afternoon from 12:30.

For the season lasting from September 2018 to August 2019, the Saturday academy is being run by Martin Burrows, who also takes his Under 7 and Under 10 (Eagles) teams.

Our Principles

The principles, coaching and outlook of the Academy enable us, not only to teach children & parents to enjoy football, but also to help develop peer ai???credibilityai??i?? in the playground to build childrenai??i??s own confidence and sense of achievement.

We work with the uncompromising principle of positive encouragement only. There is no place for negativity, frustration, disappointment or dissent.

This helps us to see changes in children’s confidence, self belief & stature in just a few weeks.

Our training plans are prepared in line with FA junior team coaching principles, but built around fun and games. There is no formal warm up, we will drill for the first part of the session and play a game to finish – we may warm down with a penalty shoot out, depending on the session plan.

We do not play games against other teams until the end of the under 6 season, but towards the Spring we arrange mini tournaments & friendlies. This is to ensure the children get the chance to develop their techniques and a love of the game at their own pace, without any pressure to succeed.

Organised matches start in year 3, when teams split and enter the Sunday leagues at a central venue, before coming back to Bridgewater Park to start more competitive, 7v7 football in year 5 (under 9).

Our Links

Within all of this, the Academy enthusiastically promotes the principles and values of the Manchester FA, with whom the club is formally affiliated. Fun, fair play and respect for all. All our Academy parents are required to complete the FA Soccer Parent course online and present their certificate in the first 5 weeks of their child starting.

Our Legacy

Most of the players and Managers that have joined Boothstown since 2004 have been inducted, developed and coached through the Academy. The success of the Boothstown teams in recent years has been built on the foundations laid down through the Academy.
